GUIDE

Is it cheating if nothing physical happened?

You're not going to get a ruling on this, and you don't actually need one. The useful question isn't whether it meets somebody's definition — it's whether they'd have been comfortable with you seeing it as it happened. That one you can both answer.

Why the definition argument is a trap

Once it becomes a debate about what counts, you've lost — not morally, just structurally. There is no agreed definition, so it becomes an argument you can't win, and every hour spent on it is an hour not spent on the thing that actually happened.

"We never even kissed" is doing a specific job in that sentence. It's moving the conversation onto ground where there's a technicality available.

The test that works

Would they have been comfortable with you reading it in real time?

Not "would they have shown you" — nobody shows you everything. Comfortable. If the messages were hidden, deleted, or would have needed explaining, then whatever we call it, they knew.

The hiding is usually the injury. It's the part that means the person you live with was managing you.

What you're allowed to mind

You don't need it to qualify as cheating to be entitled to be hurt by it. Those are separate questions, and only one of them matters for what happens next.

Plenty of relationships end over something both people agree wasn't technically cheating. Plenty survive something that was. The label does much less work than it seems to.

If you're the one who did it

The instinct is to explain the boundaries — what did and didn't happen, in order, with the reassuring parts emphasised.

That almost never lands, because the thing they're upset about isn't on your list. Answer the hiding first. Everything else is easier after that.

What to say

If you're asking

I don't want to argue about whether it counts as cheating, because we'll never agree and it's not the bit I'm stuck on. I want to know why I wasn't supposed to see it.

If you're answering

You're right that I hid it, and that's the part I can't explain away. I want to tell you what happened without making it sound smaller than it was.

Honne is a private place to get clear on what you actually think before you have that conversation. It doesn't decide who was right. Free to start, and nobody here is keeping a record.

You don't have to work this out alone, and you don't have to say it out loud to anyone yet.

One person, one account. Nothing shared, nothing sold.
